REPRESENT: Open Call!

How often do you go to the theatre and leave thinking “I didn’t see a single character I could relate to in that play”?

Do you leave feeling frustrated at seeing the same stories with the same characters? Do you leave feeling tired of not seeing complex and diverse characters on stage that represent you or the people you know? If the answer to any of these is a resounding YES then read on and help us change that.

On Wednesday September 27th from 7pm – 9pm in The Black Gate Cultural Centre on Francis Street in Galway city, An Áit Eile will be presenting REPRESENT as part of our new cultural festival Notions. REPRESENT will be a series of rehearsed readings of new short plays by new Galway voices.

If you feel underrepresented in Irish theatre based on any grounds you deem relevant (gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, age, class, disability, location etc.) we are asking for your input.

We are looking for scripts up to ten minutes in performance length (approx. 10 pages – varies with stage direction, descriptions of place and so on).

This can be a monologue, dialogue or scene and must contain characters you feel are not often seen in Irish theatre. It can be of any genre and can be fictional or autobiographical. Scripts in both Irish and English are encouraged.

A paragraph of up to 250 words to highlight how it suits the event (just a limit and not a target, however you can best explain the relevance of your work).

Have a story to tell but don’t feel comfortable as a writer? Get in contact and we’ll try to see how we can help!

DEADLINE for submissions: SUNDAY 10TH SEPTEMBER at 5pm

If you have an idea brewing you’ve wanted to unleash for ages, a new scene inspired by the event, an old play you’ve written previously and think could fit the event, or just a story to tell, please do not hesitate to get in contact with myself, Martin Kenny, An Áit Eile Theatre Editor, at [email protected].

As Bertolt Brecht says, “Art is not a mirror held up to reality but a hammer with which to shape it”. Don’t’ accept the stories you see all around you as the definitive ones. Challenge the norm. Give us your/another reality. Be the hammer.
