The Little Cinema

For over five years now, Little Cinema has been offering a helping hand to local film-makers. It serves primarily as a screening, taking place monthly and open to filmmakers of all levels to a packed room at the Róisín Dubh. There are only three simple rules to screen at the Little Cinema, first that the film is under 10 mins, second that the filmmaker can attend the screening and lastly that the film gets introduced by its maker in front of the audience, which is always really receptive and supportive of new filmmakers.

If you’ve never heard of the Little Cinema, or have been meaning to go, then do yourself a favour and get down to the next event. Each night is a fantastic blend of short films, usually 8-10 per screening, ranging from comedies to horrors, music videos to documentaries and anything else you can imagine. The perfect date night; lots of short films which you can chat about, while having a few drinks! Whether or not you’re interested in making films yourself, you’d be hard pressed to find a better night’s entertainment.

If you are interested in making films, however, then Little Cinema has even more to offer. What has emerged from the past five years of regular screenings is a huge community of talented individuals who have come together for the good of the local film scene. What’s more, everyone is welcome to join this community, from outright beginners to seasoned professionals. If you’ve got ideas to share, or would just like to help out on a production, the Little Cinema can help facilitate that. Come along to any screening and you’ll see each filmmaker introduce their piece, and once the films are done, go and say hello! There have been countless collaborative films made by people who met at Little Cinema, and we’re always eager to see new faces and fresh ideas on our big screen.

We also work closely with a number of other great events; for the last two years we’ve had  screenings at the Galway Film Fleadh and Electric Picnic, as well as special screenings in collaboration with Seachtain Na Gaeilge and the Galway Theatre Festival. We’ve been honoured to host Chris O’Dowd at one of our screenings, who is a patron and friend of Little Cinema. We also recently screened the sublime feature Patrick’s Day, attended by the writer and director Terry McMahon who gave an engaging, enlightening and educational talk to upcoming filmmakers.

Little Cinema takes place on the last Wednesday of every month. Our next event, to be held on Wednesday October 28th, is our annual Halloween screening. Each year we set a challenge to make short horror films, and each year we get back amazing, inventive and often terrifying shorts! AND, it’s fancy dress! If this sounds interesting then tickets are available now at this link!  Last month’s screening sold out completely and we had to turn away lots of lovely people, so to make sure you can get in, we recommend you get your ticket in advance.
