Looking for the most beautiful towns in Cádiz? What can we tell you that you don’t already know about this wonderful province in the south of Spain? Since 2019, when The New York Times named it a province you must visit, its fame has continued to grow, making it one of the most popular destinations in Spain, especially in summer. It is true that a summer in Cádiz is worth an extra year of life, but it is also true that Cádiz awaits you all year round, from autumn to spring.
Perhaps you think first of its whitewashed villages, but there are many other charming towns off the beaten path that you should also explore. Pack your bags, pick a hotel to stay in, and hit the road to discover some of these towns.
Rota
Fringed by 16 kilometers of beaches and lush pine forests, Rota is the perfect summer destination. You’ve surely heard about the Rota Naval Base, but beyond it, the town features a well-preserved historic ensemble, with notable buildings such as the Castle of the Moon, erected in the 13th century on an ancient Arab ribat from the 11th century, and also the Parish of Our Lady of the O and the Chapel of Charity.
What can you discover in Rota that might surprise you? The homes of the local farmers, also called the mayetos, or the houses that “trascalan,” a building style unique to the Town of Rota, which in the past referred to the construction of attached houses. The separation between them was so minimal that they shared spaces and daily life among neighbors.
And don’t forget its gastronomy: in Rota you must try the Tintilla wine and its flagship tapa, the urta a la roteña. Follow our steps through Rota at this link.
