As Ireland basks in the long-awaited summer sunshine, safeguarding the scalp remains a crucial aspect of sun safety.
The warm spell seems here to stay, and honestly, we’re not complaining. We’ve all learned the importance of proper sun protection. While we routinely apply SPF 50 every two hours to safeguard the face and body, scalp and hair protection is frequently overlooked.
People with lighter shades—grey, blonde, or red hair—tend to be more vulnerable since lighter tresses offer less natural shielding from UV rays. With the head unprotected in the sun, the risk of scalp sunburn and UV-related damage increases.
Bearing this in mind, taking extra precautions is essential to ensure full sun safety everywhere. Fresha beauty expert Annabelle Taurua explains how to look after lighter hair during the summer.
“People with blonde, grey, red, or bleached hair face a higher risk of scalp sunburn since lighter hair has less melanin, the natural pigment that helps shield against UV radiation. With reduced natural protection in both the hair and the skin beneath, harmful UV rays can reach the scalp more readily, increasing the likelihood of sunburn and lasting damage,” she notes.
“The sun’s impact isn’t limited to the scalp; it can also affect the health and look of your hair. UV exposure can damage the hair’s structure by degrading the proteins that keep strands strong, leaving hair dry, coarse, and brittle. UVA rays can also break down color pigments, causing both dyed and natural shades to fade.”
To prevent this, Annabelle suggests using haircare products that include UV protection.
“When you’re outside, think about applying leave-in sprays or lightweight oils that contain UV filters; she recommends options such as Charles Worthington Sunshine UV Protection Leave-In Spray and Schwarzkopf BC Sun Protect Scalp and Hair Mist with SPF 20. These light formulas can be used on damp or dry hair before sun exposure to form a protective barrier and minimize UV damage.”
Annabelle also endorses a more robust protective measure by donning physical barriers, such as a hat or bandana.
“Physical protection continues to be among the most effective methods for preventing direct sun exposure. Wearing a wide-brimmed hat or a scarf isn’t just a fashionable summer item; it also adds an extra shield for both your scalp and colored hair.”
“Lastly, for people with blonde or grey hair, integrating purple or blue toning treatments into your routine can counteract yellow and orange hues caused by sun exposure, helping your color stay looking fresher all summer long.”
