In Southeast Asia, ceramic tiles constituted an artistic and cultural legacy in the British settlements along the Strait of Malacca, Penang, and Singapore during the colonial era. Inspired by the opulence of Britain’s Victorian era, many of these designs embraced the Art Nouveau aesthetic, characterized by delicate, elegant, and sinuous lines, in a vivid chromatic intensity. Today, they can still be admired on the entry porches of old houses in Emerald Hill, Ann Siang Hill, Joo Chiat Road, Blair Road, and Neil Road.
