Any Mallorcan knows that the Club de Mar is not an ordinary place. For years its nightclub Mar Salada witnessed endless nights in which Mallorcan royalty and the jet set shared space with the rest of us mortals. Its nights were legendary, and its fame was the stuff of legends. But that is history now.
After several years closed to the public due to the pharaonic construction works, this space located on Palma’s Seafront—one of the most coveted and beautiful—reopens its doors in grand fashion, with a bright, open-plan space that engages with the public without turning its back on the members and its maritime nature, which accommodates art and becomes a new meeting point.
Where previously the functional facilities and traditions of a marina predominated, there now appear gardens inspired by the Mediterranean, broad pedestrian walkways, plazas open to the sea, and an architecture of clean lines dominated by exposed black concrete, glass, and light. More than 3,000 square meters of new construction house four buildings connected by ramps, forming a fiercely modern complex that recalls a grand museum or public space in a European capital: minimalist, elegant, and sober.
The first impression as you walk through the complex is one of spaciousness. The architecture avoids competing with the landscape and lets the protagonists be the boats, the sea, and the Serra de Tramuntana in the background. The route is dotted with small garden zones featuring agapanthus, cacti, and palm trees, softening the bluntness of the concrete. Contemporary artworks, a restored traditional vessel, and various exhibition spaces remind us that the project aims to go beyond mere nautical activity.
