Slovenia Lakes Road Trip: A Refreshing and Relaxing Summer Escape

22 August 2026

Slovenia proves the long-standing maxim popularized by fragrance makers around the world: the finest essences come in small bottles. Especially if you love nature. In the midst of European summer, when we seek that impossible place — almost utopian — of beautiful beaches or mountains without crowds, this small country offers us a different alternative. In Slovenia, nature continues to play a leading role and lakes form an essential part of the everyday landscape.

With more than 300 lakes spread across mountains, valleys, and forests, this country is perfect for a relaxed trip where the water invites us both to take a refreshing dip and to contemplate it as an infallible relaxation technique. And all of this with the advantage of not having to travel long distances to change scenery, since in just a few hours the landscape can transform completely. An alpine lake with cold waters can give way to another surrounded by gentle hills and small villages.

We propose a journey through some of Slovenia’s most representative lakes, blending well-known places with others less frequented. The aim is not to rush from one site to another, but to enjoy the journey, to stop whenever we feel like and to experience summer in a slower, more refreshing way.

Lake Bled, Slovenia, in summer.

Lake Bled

Lake Bled is probably one of the most recognizable landscapes in Slovenia. Its image seems lifted from a postcard, with its small island at the center and the church rising between the water and the mountains. Around it, green forests and a castle perched on a cliff complete a scene that seems imagined by a realist painter.

Despite its popularity, Bled remains a place where calm can still be found. As we stroll around the lake, we’ll discover less crowded corners and viewpoints that will offer us utterly changing perspectives. In summer, the chilly waters become an irresistible lure and it is not unusual to find people swimming or paddling in small traditional boats. Bled is an ideal first stop to begin to fall into the country’s rhythm.

Lake Bohinj

Not far from Bled lies a much wilder and less man-handled setting. Bohinj Lake is encircled by imposing mountains and dense forests that give it an even more remote feel. As you approach it, you’ll sense that nature presents itself in a purer and less organized way, which makes it the perfect refuge for those seeking tranquility.
