Cuenca: Spain’s Best Cocktail Bar in the Interior

23 August 2026

Maybe you already knew it, but if so you’ve kept the secret remarkably well. The Taberna Jovi is in Cuenca’s historic old town and I found it without an algorithm, without TikTok. Just because I happened to be passing by.

Service like the Ritz (seriously), aesthetics of Boadas (emulated), and on top you can enjoy an ajoarriero or a montadito while taking in its cocktail offer. Taberna Jovi not only surprises by being located in a town of just over 50,000 inhabitants, but also that you don’t have to wander far to come across this gem. You enter the city of the Hanging Houses, with its slopes, its stone, its vertical beauty and its fairy-tale pace, and suddenly you find yourself in another world. One is dark, wooden, a long bar, stools with throne-like backrests and that air of a seventies English lounge where it seems someone could be preparing a Dry Martini, an Irish coffee, or a confession. It doesn’t quite fit with what lies outside, and that is precisely part of what makes it so special.
