The Bailón River Trail, in the Parque Natural de las Sierras Subbéticas, is one of the most spectacular settings in the province of Córdoba. A canyon with impressive reliefs and waterfalls, of great geological and scenic interest, that promises to enchant us if we have not yet discovered it.
A gift of nature near Zuheros
The town of Zuheros, known for both its lovely historic center and for underground beauties in its surroundings such as the Cueva de los Murciélagos, also boasts one of the most important karst landscapes in Andalusia.
In the heart of the World Geopark of the Subbéticas Mountains and a very short distance from the town of Zuheros, a canyon appears before our eyes with formations characteristic of karst modeling, such as lapiaces, dolines or poljes. A space shaped over millions of years that has given rise to a natural setting where water, patient and constant, has gradually created an entire architecture of magnificent reliefs, among the most striking landscapes in Andalusia.
The erosive action of the Bailón River’s water on the limestone has carved this work of art of nature, carving a canyon with sheer walls up to one hundred meters tall and creating a grand visual frame.
Venturing into the canyon
From the town of Zuheros, considered one of the prettiest villages in Córdoba province, with the distinctive silhouette of its castle perched on a rocky promontory, begins the hiking route that leads to the Bailón River Trail, a walk of more than ten kilometers that guides us through the limestone canyon as we discover its numerous points of interest.
One of its main attractions, especially during the rainy season, is the presence of waterfalls. The Bailón River, despite its irregular flow –in this stretch of its course it can carry little water during the driest months due to the permeability of the terrain–, gives life to cascades that are one of the main draws for those traversing these Cordoban serrated landscapes.
The canyon route that follows the river’s course represents an entire hiking experience that perfectly blends adventure and contemplation. With moderate slopes and a duration of approximately four to six hours, it constitutes a fairly accessible route, although some sections with steeper areas require additional experience.
