During my school days I was always a hopeless draftsman. In fact, to this day I still shape people with circles and sticks. Yet the only things I managed to draw with any accuracy were the landscapes that depicted autumn forests. “Looks like Canada,” Don José Luis, who was my long-suffering drawing teacher for five years, would tell me. Perhaps that is why I always wanted to know those Canadian forests in colors that pop.
During Canadian autumn, the deep green of its forests begins to mingle with golden yellows, intense oranges, and blazing reds. The temperatures drop, the air takes on a special crispness, and the lakes, still largely ice-free across much of the country, mirror the colors of the trees surrounding them.
Although the most famous images of the season tend to come from Quebec and Ontario, the spectacle extends far beyond. From the national parks of the Rocky Mountains to the coastal trails of Nova Scotia, passing through the maple forests of New Brunswick, each region offers a different way to experience this transformation. Some invite you to wander along scenic highways; others, to walk beside rivers, sail between mountains or discover small towns where life unfolds at the pace of the harvest.
The secret lies in timing it right. The Canadian autumn starts earlier in the north and in the mountainous areas, while the more southern regions typically reach their peak during October. There is no exact date to behold the peak splendor of the colors, since it depends on temperatures, rainfall, and the first frosts. Precisely for that reason, traveling in this season also leaves room for surprise.
Algonquin Provincial Park, Ontario
About three hours by car from Toronto, Algonquin Provincial Park is one of the great classics of Canadian autumn. Its extensive forests, dotted with lakes, rivers and small islands, gift us a color palette that is especially intense when maples and birches begin to shift their tones. The greens of the conifers remain as a backdrop, while yellows, oranges and reds take over the landscape.
