Sense and Sensibility: For All Noble Hearts

23 October 2026

Sense and Sensibility returns to the big screen after more than thirty years to once again tell the story of the Dashwood sisters. Jane Austen (1775 – 1817) was adept at speaking about money, society and feelings, which coexist in harmony with her ironic and sharp gaze in this and the rest of her works. In the author’s first published novel (1811), unlike some of her later ones, she presents these themes to the reader in a explicit way and tries to convey a message we all know: neither extreme restraint, nor surrendering completely to one’s emotions, is a good course of action.

The 1995 film, starring Emma Thompson and Kate Winslet and directed by Ang Lee, won the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay, which was written by Thompson herself.

What is Sense and Sensibility About?

In this new version now in theaters, directed by Georgia Oakley, Daisy Edgar-Jones and Esme Creed-Miles have brought to life Elinor and Marianne (sense and sensibility respectively), who are forced to abruptly leave their home (a magnificent country mansion, Norland Park) along with their mother and younger sister upon their father’s death. At that time, it was the male children who inherited their father’s estates.

I write about culture, gastronomy, and lifestyle with a deep interest in the places, people, and traditions that shape how we live. I am drawn to stories that feel thoughtful, vivid, and rooted in real experience, whether they begin in a gallery, around a table, or in the rhythm of everyday life.
