‘Projecting a Black Planet: The Art and Culture of Pan-Africanism’, MACBA (Until April 19)
Here is the first international exhibition of its magnitude on the cultural expressions of Pan-Africanism from the 1920s to the present day. Curated by the museum’s director, Elvira Dyangani Ose, together with Antawan Byrd, Adom Getachew, and Matthew S. Witkovsky, Projecting a Black Planet: The Art and Culture of Pan-Africanism will remain at MACBA until Friday the 19th.
Comprising 500 works by around 100 artists, the exhibition presents the art of the African diaspora as a key to understanding the exchange of influences between the continent’s art and the works produced by Black communities worldwide. The show immerses visitors in the fine arts, music, and vernacular cultures of Africa, Brazil, the Caribbean, North America, and Western Europe.
The project, driven by the Art Institute of Chicago in collaboration with the Barbican Centre in London and the KANAL Centre Pompidou in Brussels –whose opening is scheduled for November 2026–, will tour these artistic institutions through spring 2027.
