How to repair a damaged skin barrier: insights from an Irish skincare expert

6 May 2026

If you suspect your skin barrier has been compromised, here’s how to restore it.

A compromised skin barrier isn’t a common complaint, especially when many skincare products claim to do a variety of things. The damage typically happens when the outermost layer of the skin is weakened by overuse or inappropriate products, excessive exfoliation, or environmental stressors such as cold weather and UV exposure.

You can tell your barrier is disrupted if your skin feels dry, red and flaky, if the texture is rough, or if it feels tight or uncomfortable. You may also experience a stinging sensation when applying skincare products.

Fortunately, there is a way to reverse the damage, according to Niamh Hogan, the founder of the Enniscorthy-based skincare line Holos, who shares her guidance.

“If your skin barrier has been damaged, you’re likely seeing breakouts and dull, flaky skin,” explains Niamh. “First, pause all active products—exfoliants, acids, and retinoids—and switch to a gentle cleanse and moisturise routine until your skin recovers.”

In essence, trimming your skincare routine back to the basics will help your skin return to its normal state. A mild approach focused on hydration and recovery should have your skin returning to its usual condition in roughly two to four weeks.

As a practical tip, Niamh also notes that while healing the skin barrier, you should be mindful of active ingredients in cosmetics as well, such as foundation.

After the skin has repaired itself, Niamh asserts that achieving healthy, radiant skin does not require harsh or active products. “Targeted exfoliation, a brighter complexion, reduced lines and lasting hydration don’t demand a multitude of different daily products.” Instead, brands like Holos, her own line, can deliver strong results using gentle, nature-derived ingredients.

Exploring brands and products that align with your skin type is essential to attaining your happiest and healthiest skin to date.
