Musicals in Madrid: Top Shows of the 2026-2027 Season

22 October 2026

Madrid keeps singing, dancing, and proving that its affair with musicals is much more than a passing romance. Having become for several years now one of the great European capitals of the genre, the capital faces a 2026-2027 season packed with novelties, highly anticipated returns, and shows that have been posting “sold out” signs for years.

The Gran Vía continues to be the epicenter of this phenomenon, but the map of Madrid’s musicals extends far beyond: from the Nuevo Teatro Alcalá to Espacio Delicias, including the Teatro La Latina or the Gran Teatro CaixaBank Príncipe Pío. And, stay tuned, because in 2027 a new venue will arrive ready to revolutionize everything with the premiere of Moulin Rouge! The Musical. Are you looking for a love story, a healthy dose of nostalgia, songs you know by heart, or an excuse to escape to Madrid?

Below, we’ve gathered for you the best musicals in Madrid – whether new releases or essential classics – that you shouldn’t miss this autumn-winter. Let the curtain rise!

The Best Premieres

MOULIN ROUGE! THE MUSICAL

Baz Luhrmann stole our hearts in 2001 with his musical adaptation of La dama de las camelias, starring the towering Ewan McGregor and Nicole Kidman as leads. The tragic love story, set in Paris in 1899, gave us a legendary cabaret that we can now enjoy live, with all the songs we haven’t been able to get out of our heads since then. A little patience will be required: the musical, winner of ten Tony Awards, will land in Spain for the first time in 2027. Directed by Alex Timbers, with a libretto by John Logan and choreography by Sonya Tayeh, reimagines the story of Christian and Satine to the rhythm of big pop hits. Its premiere will inaugurate the new Stage Gran Teatro Musical, a venue with more than 1,500 seats located in the former IMAX at Enrique Tierno Galván Park.

THE SOUL IN THE AIR

When nobody is watching me, “Cuando nadie me ve,” “Corazón Partío,” “Amiga mía”… Alejandro Sanz’s songs form part of the sentimental soundtrack of several generations and now they arrive at the theatre transformed into a grand musical. But don’t expect a concert or a biographical tour of the artist’s life: The Soul in the Air tells an original story built around his greatest hits. With a libretto by Álvaro Tato, winner of two Max Awards, and with the support of the artist himself, this Stage Entertainment production is also the first musical developed entirely in Spain by the company behind successes such as The Lion King. Emotions, encounters and missteps as we rediscover (and hum along to) some of the best-loved songs of Spanish pop.

I write about culture, gastronomy, and lifestyle with a deep interest in the places, people, and traditions that shape how we live. I am drawn to stories that feel thoughtful, vivid, and rooted in real experience, whether they begin in a gallery, around a table, or in the rhythm of everyday life.
