Perimenopause and Suicidal Thoughts: Understanding Mental Health Risks

1 May 2026

Although the manifestations differ among individuals, studies indicate that nine out of ten women encounter mental health challenges during the transition into menopause

People widely recognize now that menopause can bring with it a substantial array of physical and psychological changes.

The most frequently discussed of these tend to be hot flashes, mood fluctuations, shifts in sexual desire, brain fog and night sweats.

Nevertheless, there is a darker aspect to menopausal and perimenopausal experiences that touches our mental health – notably low mood, anxiety and even thoughts of self-harm.

A 2019 study funded by Health and Her found that nine in ten women undergoing menopause encounter mental health difficulties, and about one in ten report suicidal thoughts associated with perimenopause. It’s important to note that not every woman going through menopause experiences mental health challenges, as symptoms differ from person to person.

Turn2Me, a national mental health charity, has introduced a complimentary online Menopause support group providing women with a space to discuss their experiences, whether they’re in peri-menopause, at menopause, or unsure about where they stand. It offers a platform for women to talk about the challenges they’re facing in a confidential, safe environment.”

Suzanne Ennis, Clinical Manager at Turn2Me, explained, “Whether it’s brain fog, low mood, or you’re just starting to wonder if something hormonal might be happening — join the conversation. You’ll connect with other women going through it as well, and our experienced facilitator will steer the discussion with practical information, emotional support, and, importantly, a touch of humor. You don’t need a formal diagnosis or a definite answer to join in — only curiosity, a need to vent, or a wish to feel less alone. Come as you are — confused, curious, irritable or calm. Let’s talk about it all. You’re not alone, and you’ll feel better with support.”

The complimentary online Menopause support group is scheduled for Wednesday 23 July at 6pm. All attendees are welcome, and no referral is necessary to participate.
