Casa Gigi is, above all, the story of a journey. Or rather: of many journeys. After more than ten years traveling the world and photographing the most incredible places and hotels for Condé Nast Traveler, photographer Ana Lui decided to create this low-tox (low-toxicity) house in Felanitx, Mallorca.
“We need a home in the psychological sense, as much as in the physical, to compensate for our vulnerability.” The phrase isn’t ours but that of Swiss philosopher Alain de Botton, and we have “borrowed” it from Core Living Mallorca, the studio from which Ana Lui and Alexander Elwing, also a photographer, give new, good and long life to future homes on the island where they reside.
The flagship is this Casa Gigi, her recent project in Felanitx, carried out together with architects Gori Llambías and Margalida Montoya. It is one of Mallorca’s first semi-detached houses with low toxicity, a concept linked to the conscious luxury and well-being movement.
With a sobriety that moves, every material, finish and piece of furniture here has been chosen according to its impact on indoor air quality and the environmental footprint. Thus, walls treated with lime regulate humidity and eliminate gas emissions, mattresses are 100% organic natural latex, called kipli, carpentry and the kitchen are free of formaldehyde, the electrical system has been designed to reduce exposure to electromagnetic fields, the windows are made of iroko wood, finishes have low volatile organic compound content and the floors are Mortex and Chukum, a natural Maya-origin coating.
