Continuing with our ongoing series, we meet women from diverse backgrounds to show that beauty radiates from within

Dymphna O’Dea from Tipperary retired last year and her daughter, Orla, nominated her for this experience. Orla said: “Mam always puts everyone else first instead of herself. She had a very hard year last year with her health so it would be lovely for her.”
The day itself was wonderful as Dymphna had her makeup expertly applied by Leanne from Clarins, followed by the photoshoot. The whole team agreed Dymphna was glowing from within throughout. Afterwards, we asked her about her self-care rituals.
What was the first beauty item you ever bought?
The very first beauty product I purchased was nail polish when I began my career. I wore it for years and then drifted away for no obvious reason. Yet just before Christmas 2024 our dear daughter Orla treated me to BIAB nails, and my passion for colorful nails was reignited.
Did you ever receive self-care advice when you were growing up?
My mother, despite raising five children, was always meticulous about skincare and haircare. She seemed ahead of her time, diligently protecting our skin from the sun. As the only girl, she urged me to begin using eye cream from my late teens. Later, it was she who suggested tinting my lashes (something I would never have thought of). Also, when I was in sixth year, the nuns brought in an Aer Lingus air hostess to teach makeup. Each girl received a compact with foundation and eyeshadow and was shown how to apply it. The end result was polished until my friend and I decided not to waste any of the cosmetics. We ended up using all the shades! That day we learned the timeless lesson: less is more.

What part of your regime is non negotiable for you?
I maintain a daily cleanse and moisturise routine, and my moisturiser contains SPF. I have my eyelashes tinted regularly. Lip gloss is essential for me; I’d feel bare without it. Because my skin is sensitive, I’m careful not to use creams or lotions that irritate it.
Tell us about a time you felt your most beautiful.
My Debs Ball stands out as one of those occasions. It was my first time wearing a maxi dress, which belonged to my mother. It was a beautiful sleeveless gown with a soft black bodice that flowed into a dainty, slightly floral skirt. She then allowed me to dab a touch of her Coty L’Aimant creamy skin perfume to finish the look. It was magical.
How do you prioritise self-care in your everyday life?
I’m mindful about what we eat and try to steer clear of processed foods. Staying hydrated is a priority. Exercise is a regular part of my day, and I aim to be active most days. I enjoy fitting in Pilates and meditation during the week. Reading has always been a staple in my life and serves as a wonderful way to unwind.
