Why Charlotte Is the New Place to Be in the US

22 August 2026

With bold doses of modernity and Southern tradition, Charlotte defines the new spirit of the American South. Known as “Queen City” (The Queen City), as evidenced by the hundreds of souvenirs filling the shop windows, it has experienced significant growth over the past decade. This growth owes much to an economic boom driven largely by the unstoppable business scene. Financial giants and tech companies have established themselves here, taking advantage of the city being the second-largest banking center in the United States.

In fact, in Charlotte lies the headquarters of giants Wells Fargo and Bank of America. In the main lobby of the latter one can admire monumental revolutionary frescoes, considered among the country’s most significant works of art. Executed in 1992 by Ben Long, an artist who studied the buon fresco technique in Italy, the same used by Michelangelo in the Sistine Chapel, they depict faces of local residents.

In recent years, the town has also drawn families, creatives, and young professionals seeking job opportunities, transforming it into a hub of innovation and economic dynamism. Beyond its solid financial engine, Charlotte captivates with its quality of life, balancing the opportunities of a large metropolis with accessibility and a wonderful climate, perfect for outdoor activities. All these factors act as a powerful draw for tourism. In fact, its Charlotte Douglas International Airport is advertised as one of the busiest in the world, serving as American Airlines’ second-largest hub.

But if there is one thing that has put Charlotte on the map, besides its cosmopolitanism, it is its ability to reinvent itself as a cultural and gastronomic reference, with numerous creative spaces to rest, shop, sample southern cuisine or find inspiration.

The American city that has it all

Although the capital of North Carolina is Raleigh, Charlotte is the most populous and most visited city in the state, due in part to its concentration of museums, theaters and entertainment districts.

Charlotte’s history goes back to colonial times, traces of which remain in places such as the Colonists’ Cemetery and the intersection of Trade and Tyron streets, the junction where Native American trails and trade routes crossed. Founded in 1768, it was named in honor of the British queen consort, Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz. To delve into these origins, one should explore the Charlotte History Museum, home to the Alexander Rock Tavern, the region’s oldest stone house. This past contrasts with the imposing modern skyscrapers that rise in Uptown, rivaling those of New York or Chicago.
